Wellness Program for Cancer Patients |
|
Research has shown that exercise is safe and beneficial for cancer patients. Incorporating an exercise regime into the lifestyle of a patient undergoing therapy or post-treatment can lead to an improvement in physical functioning, fatigue and quality of life. Studies show that maintaining or increasing physical fitness during cancer treatment can improve quality of life, decrease the number and intensity of side effects, and help with overall recovery. The patient will be better able to continue with normal activities such as self care, going to work or school, and socializing with friends and family.
Many people think they should rest in an effort to recuperate. Research shows that patients who rest and are physically inactive actually become weaker and more debilitated. It is important to find a balance between rest and exercise.
The American Cancer Society and the American College of Sports Medicine have developed exercise guidelines for patients with cancer or other chronic illnesses.
The idea of going to a gym may not appeal to you. There is the risk of infection from germs, or feeling self-conscious due to hair loss, weight loss or weight gain. Fit Living's exercise program comes to you. It occurs in your home.
Fit Living offers an approach that incorporates an at-home exercise regime, nutrition counseling and psychological support services. Both aerobic and strength training exercises will be employed following the guidelines established by the American Cancer Society and the American College of Sports Medicine.
Your fitness prescription will be customized to meet your needs and will be based on the type of cancer and any alterations in physiological function. It will be a progressive regime. There will be a baseline ability evaluation followed by an increase in frequency, duration and intensity, depending on tolerance. The initial core program duration will be eight weeks with the option of continuing in four week increments.
